Job Summary:

The Student Nurse III Independent Study is a position that includes employment and independent study academic course in collaboration with a prelicensure nursing program during an academic term. The purpose of the Student Nurse III Independent Study is to provide an enrichment experience for nursing students actively enrolled in a program of nursing under the continuous, direct, on-site supervision of a registered nurse, during an 1012-week academic term, with oversight provided by program of nursing designated faculty. Job function performance is incumbent upon successfully completing/learning a particular skill in accredited program of nursing.

Job Description:

Student Nurse III-Independent Study Responsibilities

Required:

Associate must successfully complete an orientation process that identifies skills needed to practice in their position and in their job assignment. Skill requirements must be met and maintained to ensure competency. This is achieved through an annual review of those particular skills and a work improvement plan for any non-compliant area.

Provides general patient care such as bathing, oral care, peri-care, dressing patients, changing/making beds, positioning, lifting, turning, ambulation, applying/utilizing assistive devices and special equipment (e.g. walkers, canes, knee immobilizer, back splints), assisting with bowel and bladder functions, preparing/assisting with meals, feeding, removing dietary trays and recording intake and output. Provides nursing care including physical assessment, documentation, medication administration (must have supervising nurse immediately present at bedside with IV and high-risk meds), activities of daily living, and personal care under continuous, direct, onsite supervision of designated RN. Performs and documents skills such as vital signs, colostomy care and changing of appliance (greater than 30 days old), insertion/irrigation, removal of nasogastric tubes, continuous and bolus enteral feedings, sterile dressing changes, suture/staples removal, trach care and suctioning, insertion/removal of intermittent and indwelling catheters, additional skills as designated in specialty areas. Placement of peripheral IV under direct supervision/immediate presence at bedside of a supervising nurse.  Discontinuation of IV/saline lock. Demonstrates ability to perform patient care procedures and documentation identified on checklist. Responsible for having skills observed and documented by three nurses in the clinical setting and submitting competency checklist to nurse manager for placement in associate permanent file.   Demonstrates knowledge of location of skills/procedures and regulatory requirements.

Professional and Technical Service

Demonstrates ability to follow directions, both oral and written and work cooperatively with other staff members. Responsible for own personal growth and development as it relates to job duties and performance. Attends education programs to maintain knowledge of treatments, procedures, and skills. Attends mandatory in-service days.

Quality/Customer Service

Utilizes customer service skills when addressing patients/visitors, physicians, co-workers face to face and on the telephone. Respects the ethnic origin, spiritual beliefs and privacy/confidentiality of those served. Participates in meetings and other committees assigned.

Financial

Uses resources of SEH in a respectful and cost-effective manner.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

**KY facilities only

Student nurses currently enrolled in pre-licensure nursing program and will be entering semester prior to last year of a 4-year program; or last term of a 2-year program or ABSN program.

Applicant must provide documentation of the following:

  • Proof of active enrollment in board-approved prelicensure nursing program
  • Copy of transcripts.
  • Documentation of skill performance evaluation or official letter from nursing program documenting successful completion of education and clinical competency of skills.

Specialized Knowledge: 

Has been given satisfactory grade for specified nursing skills in their nursing program and can satisfactorily demonstrate these skills upon acceptance into the Student Nurse Achievement Program (SNAP) Summer Independent Study.

DESIRABLE

Prior experience as a nursing assistant in hospital or long-term care environment is desirable.
