Job Summary:

This position is designed to create a pro-active pathway for high school seniors to enter the healthcare field and receive training while in school and prior to obtaining a diploma. Following the successful completion of a didactic training program, student phlebotomists will perform basic venipunctures and standard phlebotomy collections/processes under close supervision of an experienced phlebotomist. This position would prepare the student to apply for and transition to a standard phlebotomy role immediately upon graduation at which point this role will reopen for a new applicant.

Maintaining this role requires successful completion of the phlebotomy training program and passing both a practical and written exam.

Additional responsibilities are to provide general department support by stocking, cleaning, reviewing inventory and performing other duties as assigned.

Hours scheduled will be following Kentucky Child Labor Laws.

Job Description:

  • Performs specific approved phlebotomy collections while under the close supervision of a trained staff phlebotomist. Safely collects quality samples according to laboratory policies and procedures (for the accurate and timely completion of testing). Uses a variety of collection devices/sharps to obtain specimens. Able to collect non-blood specimens according to protocol. Able to direct observed patient self-collection (example: Covid -19). Collects culture specimens as required to meet quality goals.
  • Provides courteous, respectful, and helpful service to patients, visitors, staff, and physicians seeking information and/or treatment. Greets patients with a positive attitude using the AIDET communication model, giving instructions and directions as necessary to provide quality patient experiences. Evaluates physician orders for type of specimens, time of draw and any specific specimen handling requirements. Uses work lists to organize draws.   
  • Evaluates physician orders for any specific specimen handling requirements; place and/or release orders as necessary from the HIS ensuring that orders from the appropriate physician and expected service date are verified; obtain labels and organize work. Contacts experienced phlebotomist for any support needed to evaluate physician orders or special handling.
  • Displays an interest in learning. Pursues gaining knowledge of collection and ordering requirements for testing in multiple phlebotomy environments and for both basic and specialty testing including reference labs and other specialty testing labs.   
  • Uses hospital and laboratory computer systems to obtain information and clarify requests. Uses a patient identification device when applicable, various printers and phones to communicate with other departmental staff, obtain labels and organize work. Communicates with physician offices to obtain diagnosis coding information and do problem solving. Communicates with pharmacy and other patient care staff to assure proper, timely collection of various medication levels and tolerance tests.
  • Exhibits clear understanding of HIPAA requirements by being conscious of the use of patient identifiers, shielding computer screens and only accessing information necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Understands the proper use of personal protective equipment. Understands when/where to use specific forms of PPE based on patient presentation and environment. Performs appropriate hand hygiene.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Laboratory Compliance policies and procedures as well as internal mandatory Computer-based Learning modules (CBLs).
  • Cleans, organizes, rotates and stocks phlebotomy work areas, carts, OP draw sites and inpatient units to maintain a safe and orderly environment. Completes area maintenance logs and supply inventory counts as instructed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the role.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • Currently enrolled in a high school program and entering senior year.
  • Requires completion of the phlebotomy education training program and passing a practical/ written exam within the first 3 weeks of hire.

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a group within defined time frames or deadlines. 
  • Basic Computer fluency/literacy
  • Strong Communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to Organize and prioritize tasks
