Job Summary:

Acts as an expert in the area of Surgical supplies and instrumentation and a liaison with surgical staff in providing the multi-service line department of Surgical Services with appropriate instrumentation/supplies as well as customer service. Responsible for coordinating timely and accurate procurement of perioperative instruments and supplies from Sterile Processing for surgical procedures.

Job Description:

Operations

  • Collaborates with Materials Manager/Resource Nurses to coordinate procurement of special orders, instrumentation, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Recognizes significant inventory/par level discrepancies or acquisition problems and collaborates with Specialty Resource Nurses to resolve/correct discrepancies/problems.
  • Functions as liaison between Perioperative Services and interdisciplinary departments such as Sterile Processing, Central Supply, Purchasing, Warehouse, regarding instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Monitors priority list to ensure instrumentation is ready and available for all first cases for the day as well as instrumentation that must be processed for to follow cases.
  • Prioritizes and completes needed items in coordination with the OR schedule.
  • Functions as a liaison for OR rooms obtaining supplies/instruments as needed.
  • Resolve issues regarding supply availability and offers alternatives when necessary.
  • Collaborates with Specialty Resource Nurses and Surgeons to ensure availability of appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Utilizes perioperative and materials management computer software systems.
  • Collaborates with Sterile Processing to ensure efficient case cart system and sterile core cart process.
  • Collaborates with Sterile Processing, Central Supply, Purchasing, Warehouse, etc., ensuring the proper supplies are maintained for surgical procedures.
  • Maintains inventory levels of supplies and checks for outdates in sterile cores in the OR and orders supplies as needed.

Quality/Customer Service

  • Audits perioperative inventory levels, ensures quality and quantity, and works collaboratively with OR Manager and Resource Nurses to make cost-effective, quality recommendations.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative interdepartmental and intradepartmental relationships.  Communicates effectively with staff, physicians, and other health care team members.
  • Communicates with staff prior to surgical cases to ascertain specific instrument/supply needs and ensures the items are available.
  • Respects the patients ethnic origin, spiritual beliefs and the patients right to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with patients, visitors, and health care team members.

Financial Accountability

  • Assists Resource Nurses as needed in obtaining supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory in Core areas in the OR
  • Utilizes computer software programs to determine information regarding pricing, ordering, comparison studies, and accurate patient charging.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • High School Diploma
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or obtain within one year of hire.

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Expert knowledge of perioperative instrumentation, supplies, and equipment. 
  • Expert knowledge of sterilization, asepsis, and infection control practices related to surgical procedures. 
  • Knowledgeable of Joint Commission, AORN (Association of Perioperative Nurses), and AAMI (Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) standards.
  • Basic knowledge of perioperative and materials management software programs.

Kind and Length of Experience: 

  • 3 years experience with instrumentation and supply acquisition and processing for surgical procedures, including experience with case cart system, sterile processing, and inventory management.
