The Assistant Nurse Manager is a registered professional nurse who provides an associate management role for a unit/department. This position provides direct nursing care as well as unit leadership. In the absence of the Nurse Manager, the ANM is operationally responsible for the unit/department and for the quality of care delivered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Operations:
- Assists the Nurse Manager in directing/evaluating clinical nursing activities within the scope of the departments patient care delivery system by supervising, coaching, empowering, motivating, and disciplining associates.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Magnet standards and role models/facilitates/integrates this model into unit culture.
- Facilitates staff knowledge of Magnet principles and staff roles into shared governance.
- Clinically competent in nursing role to serve as mentor/coach to associates by providing direct nursing care, as well as managerial activities. Assumes an advocacy role for patients and families by utilizing the nursing process in the care, counsel, and health teaching of the ill, injured or infirm.
Financial Accountability:
- Supports Nurse Manager in maintaining budget (s) within established target (s) by assisting with setting priorities and appropriately allocating resources, meeting financial goals and adjusts staffing to meet the needs of patient demand ensuring staff productivity.
Patient Experience:
- Monitors patient experience scores and in collaboration with nurse manager, develops action plans for improvement.
- Responsible for follow-up and resolution to patient/family concerns; documentation forwarded to management in a timely manner.
- Ensures patient experience best practices such as AIDET, leadership rounding, bedside reporting, managing up etc. are being maintained.
Quality:
- Works with manager to establish and maintain ongoing performance improvement to impact patient outcomes.
- Monitors and evaluates quality of care with focus on patient safety and nurse sensitive indicators by identifying areas for improvement and developing action plans to positively impact patient outcomes.
- Monitors compliance to core measure requirements and identifies areas for improvement along with input into the development of unit-based action plans. Knowledgeable of PDSA process.
Professionalism:
- Demonstrates management and leadership skills by assisting the Nurse Manager in directing clinical nursing activities within the scope of the departments patient care delivery system, working collaboratively with other departments and acting as a change agent for facilitating new knowledge and work processes.
- Maintains licensure/certification and completes all mandatory NetLearning modules, MID, leadership development education, in-service programs, and programs intended to enhance skills pertinent to assigned clinical area.
- Ensures personal program growth and development through education and/or certification.
- Participates in community activities and professional organizations to enhance the visibility of the Healthcare System and to promote the positive image of nursing.
Employee Engagement:
- Monitors associate satisfaction and keeps leadership informed of potential issues. Works collaboratively with manager and leadership to resolve problems and identify opportunities.
- Provides input into unit based associate engagement survey action plan and monitors accordingly.
Patient Care:
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of evidence-based nursing practice and professional standards of care.
- Clinically competent in charge nurse role.
- Accepts responsibility for the supervision, teaching, mentoring, and delegating to staff in the performance of activities specific to nursing care.
- Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members to plan and deliver care and facilitate the throughput of patients.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- BSN required.
- Graduate of accredited school of Nursing
- Licensed to practice nursing in the state where work is being performed.
- Meets contact hour requirements for licensure, including all state required courses.
Specialized Knowledge:
Ability to direct self & others, aware of nursing standards, evidence based practice, policies and procedures. Demonstrates clinical proficiency relevant to the area of responsibility, rapid decision making and critical thinking skills.
Kind and Length of Experience:
Three years of experience in clinical area of responsibility required. Experience relevant to the specific clinical area(s).
