The professional nurse provides evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process to meet the surgical needs of the patient in the perioperative setting. The RN is responsible for appropriately delegating tasks to other licensed/unlicensed health care team members as deemed appropriate by training and education. The RN collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare team members when providing nursing care. Responsible for ensuring effective communication, collaboration, and coordination of activities within assigned specialty. Responsible for ensuring the availability of specialty instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
Nursing Process
- Utilizes the nursing process and functions as the patient advocate for the patients plan of care based on an accurate/concise patient assessment.
- Respects the patients ethnic origin and spiritual beliefs and the right to privacy and confidentiality.
- Appropriately prioritizes multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Works with anesthesia providers in delivering nursing care to patients requiring anesthesia.
- When assigned as the Charge Nurse, collaborates with perioperative management team, anesthesia coordinator and surgeons in the provision of surgical patient care throughout the surgical suite.
Professional and Technical Skills
- Demonstrates professionalism as a perioperative nurse. Ensures ongoing personal growth and development.
- Under the supervision of the surgeon, may suture skin layer closed.
- Knowledgeable of aseptic techniques when functioning in the perioperative setting and functions in the role of circulating nurse and scrub nurse.
- Collaborates with Assistant Nurse Manager and Clinical Educator to plan and provide clinical orientation/precepting of orientees and ongoing education/specialty training of staff.
- When assigned as Technology Resource Nurse, provides effective equipment and device troubleshooting support for staff.
Patient Safety
- Knowledgeable of and properly administers medications in the perioperative setting. Maintains a safe environment for optimal patient outcomes.
- Performs and documents accurate and complete sponge, needle, sharps, and instrument counts.
- When assigned as Technology Resource Nurse, ensures availability and proper operation of equipment and devices in collaboration with clinical engineering personnel.
Quality/Customer Service
- Documents perioperative course of care accurately and concisely.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and utilizes data to positively impact patient outcomes.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with patients, visitors, and health care team members.
- Collaborates with Director of Perioperative Business Operations and marketing department regarding new surgical procedures/technology.
- Reviews surgical procedures to ensure physician/patient specialty instrumentation/supply/equipment needs are met.
- When assigned as Technology Resource Nurse, ensures comprehensive, effective support for medical device/equipment systems in collaboration with clinical engineering personnel.
Financial Accountability
- Financial accountable for efficient cost-effective utilization of equipment/supplies.
- Ensures accurate completion of the patient charging process, including preoperative and pre-anesthesia equipment and supplies.
- Collaborates with Director of Perioperative Business Operations regarding new products/equipment.
- Collaborates with staff, managers, surgeons and Director of Perioperative Business Operations to assist in completion of capital budget planning and implementation.
- Ensures accurate completion of the patient charging process, including preoperative and pre-anesthesia equipment and supplies.
On-Call Responsibilities
- Responds in the required time frame for emergent surgical cases and is prepared/ready within the required time frame.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Current registration to practice nursing in the state where work is being performed.
- Meets contact hour requirements for licensure, including all state-required courses
Specialized Knowledge:
Knowledge of the assessment and preparation of patients for surgery. In-depth knowledge of specific surgical specialty including anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation, and equipment/supplies. Competent in mathematical calculations associated with medication administration. Competent to independently perform safe nursing skills and procedures.
Kind and Length of Experience:
3 years operating room experience.
Previous experience in similar operating room position. Experience in assigned specialty. Experience with video systems/technology/informatics.
