Job Summary:

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a licensed Registered Nurse, meeting all the criteria defined in that description. A licensure credential of RN/SANE is obtained to indicate additional training and skills related to forensic nursing care. Forensic nursing care integrates forensic and nursing science within assessment and care of victims and perpetrators of physical, psychological or social trauma. Basic forensic nursing is practiced by Registered Nurses who have knowledge and skills necessary for a specific role in forensic nursing, such as a SANE. Specialized care involves the collection of evidence, identification and documentation of injury in population that may include but not limited to sexual assault, suspects, interpersonal violence, elder abuse or vulnerable populations.

Job Description:

Job Duties

  • Collects data in a systemic and ongoing process with a focus on identifying the medical-legal implications of those findings.  Prioritizes data collection activities based on patients immediate condition, anticipated needs of the patient or situation and preservation of legal evidence.

  • Involves the patient, family, other healthcare providers and other collaborating professionals in formulating expected outcomes when possible and appropriate.  Engages in teamwork as a team player and a team builder.

  • Derives the diagnosis or issues based on assessment data. Develops an individualized plan considering patient characteristics or the situation (E.g. age and culturally appropriate environmentally sensitive).

  • Acquires knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty area, practice setting, role or situation.  Engages in self-evaluation of practice on a regular basis, identifying areas of strength as well as areas in which professional development would be beneficial.  Uses ongoing assessment data to revise the diagnoses, outcomes, the plan and the implementation as needed.

  • Uses health promotion and health teaching methods appropriate to the situation and the patients developmental level, learning needs, readiness, ability to learn, language preference and culture.

  • Demonstrates quality by documenting the application of the nursing process in a responsible, accountable and ethical manner.  Shares knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues as evidenced by such activities as case review, presentations at formal and informal meetings or mentoring.

  • Document referrals, including provisions for continuity of care.

  • Utilizes the best available evidence including research findings to guide practice decisions.

  • Assists the patient and family in the identifying and securing appropriate and available services to address health-related needs.

  • Deliver care in a manner that protests patient autonomy, dignity and rights.

  • Other duties as assigned

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • Licensed to practice nursing in the state where work is being performed.

  • Must hold a SANE credential from Kentucky Board of Nursing.

  • Must obtain 5 contact hours annually in the area of Forensic Nursing.

  • Meets contact hour requirements for licensure, including all state-required courses.

Specialized Knowledge: 

Demonstrates knowledge of nursing theory, policies and procedures related to forensic evidence collection and documentation of injury.

Independently performs safe nursing skills and procedures.

Kind and Length of Experience: 

1 year of nursing practice.
