40Job Summary:
This position is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the Histology laboratory and serves as the technical supervisor. All duties will be performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards and will comply with all criteria mandated by appropriate accrediting and licensing agencies.Position supervises the daily activities of the lab including but not limited to staff scheduling, timecard review/approval, training/education, competency and proficiency testing, and associate evaluation/review. In addition, assists in the following: cost analysis, method evaluations, equipment preventative maintenance, document control/record maintenance, and quality management. Assists administrative staff in developing/reviewing policies, procedures, and process improvement for the laboratory.
Position provides leadership and guidance to section staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management, and outcome achievement.

Job Description:
Department Operations:
- Maintains staff schedules and monitors proper use of overtime & on-call coverage.
- Manages supply inventory & expenses and ensures compliance with operational budgets.
- Assists with the development of the operating and capital budgets.
- Responsible for writing and updating departmental procedures.
- Understands principles involved in assigned procedures and functions as the technical expert.
- Resolves technical issues and ensures corrective actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications.
- Review all reports for clerical or technical errors and omissions. Ensures all errors are corrected.
- Manages the block/slide archival & retrieval processes; ensures accurate & timely storage/retrieval of blocks & slides.
Quality Assurance:
- Assists in the development of the Quality Management Program. Reviews, documents, and communicates Non-Conforming Events and corrective actions.
- Oversees & develops QC protocols. Ensures procedures/processes are performed and recorded in compliance with all Federal and State regulatory standards.
- Gathers/provides QC & QA data for departmental, shift, or laboratory reporting in accordance with the QM program.
- Ensures the laboratory meets all regulatory requirements for Joint Commission, CLIA, and CAP.
- Maintains/assists in proficiency testing.
Equipment for Test Methodology:
- Evaluates and maintains equipment, supplies, and procedures to remain current and cost effective in providing quality patient care.
- Monitors equipment for safety consideration as well as longevity of the instrument.
- Collaborates with lab leaders in the selection of technology for clinical and nonclinical use.
- Responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Assures validations are performed as appropriate for equipment and test kits prior to use in patient care.
Human Resource Tasks:
- Assists in hiring, orientation, and evaluation of personnel within the department to maintain competent and reliable staffing in accordance with Evaluation of Performance policy.
- Oversee the completion of annual competency assessments and performance appraisals.
- Ensure departmental staff has obtained required CEs.
- Establish training programs to meet the needs of the department in technical work, safety, and quality.
- Enhances professional growth development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by but not limited to, participation in continuing education and in-service training.
- Ensures all staff (including self) adhere to the Organization Safety & Infection Control policies.
- Coaches, mentors, and supports staff.
Communication/Customer Service:
- Works with internal and external healthcare associates to determine and monitor the needs of the medical center and/or the community.
- Is available for questions and consultations concerning technical, personnel, or billing issues and initiates corrective actions through the use of good communication and human relation skills.
- Readily communicates pertinent information and issues to laboratory leadership and staff in a timely manner.
Performance Improvement:
- Assists in the development & implementation of the laboratorys CQI program in accordance with the CQI policy.
- Gathers data for the CQI program and reports results as indicated.
- Implements changes when indicated by results of CQI or root cause analysis studies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- Baccalaureate Degree OR at least 60 semester hours of academic credit, from an accredited university, with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry.
- Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) ASCP certification
Kind and Length of Experience:
- 5+ years experience as a certified Histotechnician or Histotechnologist
