Job Description:

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) provides comprehensive inpatient care to critically ill adult patients within the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at St. Elizabeth Healthcare. Working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary critical care team, the APP is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with acute, complex, and life-threatening conditions.

This role follows a shift-based practice model that provides coverage across both days and nights, ensuring continuity of care and supporting evidence-based practice, quality outcomes, and exceptional patient-centered care.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Provide comprehensive critical care management for patients admitted to the MICU.
  • Perform detailed histories, physical examinations, consultations, and ongoing reassessments of critically ill patients.
  • Develop, implement, and modify treatment plans in collaboration with physicians and the multidisciplinary care team.
  • Order, interpret, and analyze laboratory, diagnostic, and imaging studies.
  • Perform and assist with procedures within scope of practice, training, and credentialing.
  • Manage acute and chronic critical illnesses, including respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, multi-organ dysfunction, and other complex medical conditions.
  • Coordinate care with physicians, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and facilitate communication among team members, patients, and families.
  • Educate patients and family members regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, prognosis, and discharge planning as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation within the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, continuing education, and departmental meetings.
  • Comply with all organizational policies, clinical practice guidelines, regulatory requirements, and patient confidentiality standards.

Schedule


  • Approximately 181 twelve-hour shifts annually.
  • Flexible rotating schedule consisting of approximately three-month blocks of day shifts followed by three-month blocks of night shifts, with the rotation repeating throughout the year.
  • Opportunities may be available to pick up additional day or night shifts based on departmental needs and provider preference.
  • Collaborative team environment that supports scheduling flexibility, shared coverage, and continuity of patient care.

Qualifications

Required


  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Kentucky licensure (or eligibility for licensure).
  • DEA registration and applicable certifications as required.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary critical care team.

Preferred


  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) certification for NP candidates.
  • Previous experience in critical care, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, pulmonary/critical care, or a related inpatient specialty.
  • Experience managing critically ill adult patients in an ICU setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient-centered care.
