Job Description – Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider
Overview
The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive, patient-centered care for adults with cancer across the continuum of medical oncology services. This role is primarily clinic-based and focuses on independent evaluation and management of oncology patients, including new consultations, follow-up visits, treatment monitoring, symptom management, and survivorship care.
The APRN works collaboratively with medical oncologists and the multidisciplinary cancer care team while functioning at the top of their licensure to improve access, quality, and continuity of oncology care.
Key Responsibilities / Expectations
Clinical Care
Conduct comprehensive histories and physical examinations for new and established medical oncology patients
Independently manage follow-up and treatment-related visits in the outpatient clinic setting
Assess, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic issues related to cancer and cancer therapies
Manage treatment-related toxicities and symptoms (e.g., fatigue, nausea, pain, cytopenias, rash, neuropathy)
Order and interpret laboratory studies, imaging, and other diagnostic tests
Prescribe medications and supportive therapies within scope of practice
Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with supervising oncologists
Care Coordination & Continuity
Collaborate with physicians, nursing, pharmacy, social work, nutrition, palliative care, and other disciplines
Coordinate care transitions between clinic, hospital, and supportive services
Ensure timely follow-up, surveillance, and survivorship planning
Participate in multidisciplinary discussions, including tumor boards, as appropriate
Patient & Family Education
Educate patients and caregivers on diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, and expected side effects
Provide counseling regarding symptom management, treatment adherence, and self-care strategies
Support shared decision-making and informed consent processes
Quality, Safety & Documentation
Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic medical record
Adhere to institutional policies, evidence-based oncology guidelines (e.g., NCCN, ASCO), and regulatory standards
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and workflow optimization efforts
Promote patient safety and high-reliability practices within the oncology clinic
Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited program.
Board certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
Licensure
Active, unrestricted NP licensure in Kentucky or eligibility to obtain Kentucky licensure.
Experience
Minimum of 2 years of experience in an oncology healthcare setting preferred.
Experience in both inpatient and outpatient oncology care highly desirable.
National board certification as an APRN (Adult-Gerontology, Family, or equivalent) - Preferred
Skills
Strong clinical knowledge of medical oncology, including systemic therapies and symptom management.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient interaction and team collaboration.
Ability to work independently while functioning effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Proficiency with electronic health records; EPIC experience preferred.
Other Requirements
BLS/ACLS certification required.
