Job Summary:

The Student Nurse II will perform skills that are routinely part of a nurse assistants job. The Student Nurse II will also perform additional skills and tasks that have been taught in their academic accredited nursing education program. Job function performance is incumbent upon the Student Nurse II successfully completing/learning a particular skill in his/her accredited program of nursing. The Student Nurse II provides nursing assistance under the continuous, direct, on-site supervision of a registered nurse. Assists patients with activities of daily living; provides for personal care, comfort and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment for an assigned group of patients. The Student Nurse II can perform clerical related duties on the unit.

Job Description:

Student Nurse II Responsibilities

Must successfully complete an orientation process that identifies skills needed to practice in position and in job assignment. Skill requirements must be met and maintained to ensure competency. This is achieved through an annual review of those skills and a work improvement plan for any non-compliant area.

  • Provides general patient care such as bathing, mouth care, peri-care, dressing patients, changing/making beds, positioning patients, lifting and turning, applying/utilizing assistive devices and special equipment (e.g. walkers, canes, knee immobilizer, back splints), assisting with bowel and bladder functions and ambulating patients.
  • Prepares and assists patients with meals, feeds patients, removes dietary trays and records accurate intake and output.  Documents amount and percent of meals and fluids according to Intake and Output and Calorie Count procedures.
  • Provides spot check pulse oximetry, discontinuation saline lock, colostomy care and changing of appliance (greater than 30 days old), insertion/irrigation, removal of nasogastric tubes, continuous and bolus enteral feedings, sterile dressing changes, suture/staples removal, trach care and suctioning, insertion/removal of intermittent and indwelling catheters.
  • Placement of peripheral IV infusion devices under direct supervision/immediate presence at bedside of a supervising nurse.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform patient care procedures identified in the nurse extern checklist and charts care provided. Demonstrates knowledge of location of skills/procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Schedules and rounds 8-hours with wound care nurse.
  • Responsible for having tested skills observed and documented by three nurses in clinical setting and submitting competency checklist to nurse manager for placement in employee permanent file.  
  • Organizes and performs clerical duties in epic related to worklist tasks (admission, discharges, transfers, and death) to assure pertinent data is recorded. Complete worklist tasks triggered by physician orders or nurse generated tasks.  Updates and maintains patient records as defined by organizational and unit.
  • Performs activities designed to support unit as directed such as ensuring compliance with environmental standards and participation in performance improvement activities, etc. Assists in maintaining adequate amount of supplies on nursing unit and obtains other items as needed from central supply and Par level.
  • Functions as information source for staff, patients, and visitors. Relays written and verbal communication and is responsible for reporting pertinent patient/family observations to the professional staff.

Professional and Technical Service

  • Demonstrates ability to follow directions, both oral and written and work cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Responsible for own personal growth and development as it relates to job duties and performance.
  • Attends education programs, as assigned to maintain knowledge of treatments, procedures, and clinical skills. Attends mandatory in-service days.

Quality/Customer Service

  • Utilizes customer service skills when addressing patients/visitors, physicians, co-workers face to face and on the telephone
  • Respects the ethnic origin, spiritual beliefs and privacy/confidentiality of those served.
  • Participates in departmental meetings as well as other committees assigned.

Financial

  • Uses resources of SEH in a respectful and cost-effective manner

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

**KY facilities only**

  • Student nurses who are currently enrolled in a pre-licensure nursing program and will be entering their last year of a 4-year program and last term of a 2-year program.
  • Applicant must provide documentation of the following:
  • Proof of active enrollment in board-approved prelicensure nursing program.
  • Documentation of skill performance evaluation or official letter from nursing program documenting successful completion of education and clinical competency of skills.

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Satisfactory grade for skills in nursing program and demonstrates competency upon acceptance into Student Nurse II role in Student Nurse Achievement Program (SNAP).
