The lactation consultant provides education, assistance, and skilled support to breastfeeding women. The lactation consultant promotes, supports and protects the practice of breastfeeding by helping breastfeeding women and families define and achieve their breastfeeding goals.Job Description:
Makes in-hospital rounds of breastfeeding mothers on assigned units and other hospital departments. Communicates and collaborates with other health care professionals on staff to establish care plans and priorities based on the individual needs of each breastfeeding mother/baby. Documents above care in a complete, accurate and timely manner.
Works with staff breastfeeding committee, nurse manager, maternal-child nursing director and OB clinical specialist to develop, revise, and promote policies and protocols in line with the WHO/UNICEF Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and the Baby-Friendly Hospital Certification.
Develops and/or gathers written educational materials and presents programs for other health care professionals to share current, research-based information and demonstrates skills to empower those professionals to provide informed and appropriate guidance to the breastfeeding family.
Teaches prenatal breastfeeding classes twice a month, and young adult (teen) classes as requested by the OB Community Educator. Develops or provides appropriate, understandable patient education materials, and reviews and updates same as necessary
Provides free baby weight checks and consultations to patients before and after discharge.
Provides follow-up information and assistance for pre-admission and post hospital discharge in the form of letters, phone calls, and referrals from other professionals, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
RN from accredited institution
Current certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners
Specialized Knowledge:
Breast anatomy
Infant oral anatomy
Physiology and endocrinology related to lactation
Counseling skills
Growth parameters and developmental milestone
Knowledge of medical terminology medical-legal ethics and standards of practice
Management of breastfeeding in routine, non-routine situations.
Kind and Length of Experience:
2 years of experience including lactation education with pregnant/breastfeeding women and 1 year working on an obstetric unit.
1000 hours of 1:1 lactation counseling
