Job Summary:

The Nurse Manager Surgery is a registered professional nurse with 24-hour, seven days-a-week accountability and authority for ensuring evidence-based quality patient care within a unit or department and for managing the resources necessary to deliver care. Provides direct patient care as required. Responsible for hiring, evaluating, and maintaining qualified competent staff to serve patient needs in a very busy, fast-paced surgical environment. Responsible for managing the daily operations including daily surgical case schedule staffing, budget, supplies, equipment and maintaining and promoting best practices and excellent physician relations.

Job Description:

Operations

Accountable for maintaining professional and clinical skills for self and staff.   Assesses capabilities and needs of each staff member through the evaluation process, assures completion of orientation, and facilitates professional growth and development. Collaborates with Anesthesia and Perfusion personnel in the provision of patient care. Collaborates with Sterile Processing personnel to ensure availability of instrumentation and sterile supplies to meet the clinical needs of patients. Collaborates with Anesthesia to ensure allocation of resources to meet the clinical needs of patients. Assists System Director with oversight of Block Scheduling processes and monitoring utilization of allocated block time. Collaborates with Anesthesia, Same Day Surgery, and nursing unit personnel to ensure timely and effective patient throughput. Completes performance evaluations on self and staff accurately and timely.   Identifies areas of improvement and develops action plans to achieve success.   Monitors associate turnover and vacancy rates and submits action plans to achieve departmental and organizational goals. Identifies and manages change to achieve the core vision and values in an efficient and effective manner by supervising, coaching, empowering, motivating, and disciplining associates.   Demonstrates conflict prevention and management through intradepartmental and interdepartmental team building. Demonstrates effective communication skills through active listening, effective verbal and written communications, regularly scheduled departmental meetings, and prompt response to issues/concerns.  Works closely with Assistant Nurse Managers, and other departments/services to ensure effective communication/collaboration with various health care team members. Functions in scrub and circulating role as needed.

Financial Accountability

Provides input, advice, and evaluation into the budget development process and executes accountability in regard to implementing the unit budget.  Demonstrates fiscal accountability by maintaining services within budgetary and human resource constraints. Creates, monitors, and research opportunities for growth, develops proposals and business plans, and provides updates/reviews of new programs and initiatives.  Maintains budget(s) within established target(s) by identifying priorities and appropriately allocating resources. Adjusts staffing based on census/activity. Strives to meet organization/department financial goals by monitoring/adjusting staffing and expenses based on budget and productivity targets.

Quality/Customer Service

Participates in and utilizes performance improvement to impact patient outcomes and overall efficiency and effectiveness of operations.  Monitors and evaluates quality of care with a focus on patient safety and nurse sensitive indicators. Monitors patient satisfaction surveys and develops action plans for improvement. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills and collaborative relationships with interdepartmental/intradepartmental staff, health care team members, physicians and vendors.

Professionalism

Demonstrates management and leadership skills in directing operational activities. Ensures ongoing personal growth and development, including utilizing organizational survey feedback for development of action plans for improvement. Demonstrates clinical knowledge, based on evidence-based nursing research, critical thinking skills, and applies professional practice standards and practices nursing within the scope of the Kentucky Nurse Practice Act.  Ensures that clinical processes meet and/or exceed regulatory agency guidelines.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

Bachelors degree in Nursing. Graduate of accredited school of nursing, licensed to practice nursing in the state where work is being performed. Meets contact hour requirements for licensure, including all state-required courses.

Specialized Knowledge: 

Ability to direct self and others and interpret nursing policies, procedures, and standards.  Knowledge of management theory.  Demonstrates application of leadership concepts.  Clinical expertise in surgery environment.

Kind and Length of Experience: 

Minimum 5 years of Operating Room experience, including 1 year leadership/management experience.   Experience with staffing/scheduling and managing a unit/department budget. Demonstrated ability to develop, promote, and maintain effective relationships with physicians and anesthesia personnel.

DESIRABLE

Master's in nursing or health care related field.  CNOR certification. Nurse Executive, Advanced (NEA) certification.

Ability to interface designated clinical area with the institutions mission, goals and objectives as it relates to organizational structure and process.

Previous experience as Nurse Manager of Surgery.
