Job Summary:

The Financial Counselors work with patients to resolve insurance and billing issues as well as help them with financial assistance programs. They serve as a gatekeeper by assisting Registration, Pre Access, First Source, and the Self Pay Unit by obtaining missing signatures, additional insurance or income information, coverage through COBRA, resolving Medicare MSP issues, point of service collections, taking payments on patient balances and verification and pre-cert of insurance discovered after patient has been discharged. They also work with OB patients to provide estimates for their delivery and newborn.

Job Description:

Patient Satisfaction:

  • Interacts with patients and/or their family members, insurance companies, social workers and other departments. 
  • Interacts with patients via phone or Face to Face in an attempt to uncover additional information that may qualify the patient for coverage through Medicaid, Hospital charity program, prompt pay discount, payment by credit card, payment arrangements, etc.
  • Assist patients with Insurance Denial Letter when days are denied due to delay in treatment, lack of medical necessity, termination of benefits, non-participating provider, etc.

Reports/Work Qs:

  • Medicare, Life Time Reserve (LTR) Report, Patient Account Work Q must be worked daily to ensure that insurance coverage is secured on all patients before discharge. 
  • Receives accounts from Pre Access and through systems/work lists to contact in house patients to resolve MSP issues, insurance issues, ID # correct, COBRA, pre-existing issues, point of service, co-pay/deductibles, etc.

Revenue Cycle Management:

  • Resolve account balances thru payment by credit card, payment arrangements, referral for bank loan, etc.
  • Obtains consent from patient to use Medicare LTR days.
  • Creates estimates for delivery charges for all OB patients and provides information to them in an attempt to collect balances due
  • Confirms newborn admission coverage (excluding self pay and Medicaid)

Vendor Relation:

  • Assists third party vendors/early out vendor and or patients with itemized statements, adjustments, insurance issues, charity, bankruptcy, settlements, and all other requests. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Experience in hospital third party billing and follow-up; PC skills; detail oriented; customer service skills; communication skills

Kind and Length of Experience:

  • Three years experience in financial counseling or related field such as Patient Access or Patient Finance.
