Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the department and the Pharmacy staff ensuring efficient and effective operation of the pharmacy. The supervisor assures the pharmacy is providing optimal patient care while maintaining the necessary regulatory standards.

Job Description:

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of pharmacy team. 
  • Hire, motivate, transfer, suspend, promote, review, discharge, assign, reward, discipline, direct associates. Address associates concerns/complaints.  
  • Under the direction of the System Director, provide input on how to a perform task and how to achieve the goals.
  • Create and supervise work schedules, vacation schedules, time off and overtime, training qualifications and meetings. Insure the proper quantity and skill set of staff is present to meet the needs of our patients.
  • Track and record workload summary for analysis (including volume, census, and staff) to insure effective planning, staffing, and development of the department
  • Delegate and check daily assignments.  Prioritize and delegate tasks and projects within the department.  Schedule appropriate coverage when necessary. This includes monitoring timely completion of tasks, redirection of staff to meet patient needs and encouraging use of the ICARE and AIDET model in interaction with staff, patients and visitors. Assure department is working in the most effective manner.
  • Ensure compliance with sterile and non-sterile compounding practices with USP Chapters, 795, 797 and 800.

Contributes to the Positive Overall Financial Status of the Department.  In collaboration with Director and Clinical Manager, develops and implements opportunities to provide cost -effective patient care.  

Participates in the development, collecting, monitoring and action plans for improvement of the Quality Improvement program to insure resolution of variance and improved patient care.

Assures departmental policies, procedures and operations are aligned with (meet or exceed) the regulatory guidelines, rules or laws including those resented by State Board of Pharmacy, Drug Enforcement Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and The Joint Commission.

Contributes to development of good working relationship with physicians and other departments so the goals of the department and St Elizabeth Healthcare are achieved. Function as pharmacy liaison, including participation in meetings and standing in for a staff pharmacist or the Director when needed with various committees and at meetings

Maintain skills to perform duties of a pharmacist when necessary, including:

  • Medication order Verification
  • Therapeutic Monitoring
  • Dispensing pharmaceuticals
  • Supervising non-pharmacist staff
  • Medication Use Safety
  • Clinical interventions and rounding
  • Documents medication therapy assessments and recommendations in the patient’s chart using iVents and progress notes, keeping the interdisciplinary team appraised of pharmacy related assessments and interventions. 

Maintains Professional Competency:  Maintains licensure.  Completes all departmental competency/skills assessment requirements.  Maintains current knowledge of pharmacy practice. 

Medication Use Safety Initiatives: Monitors, detects and reports in a timely manner variances in dispensing on internal variance report forms or in Midas as is appropriate.  Identifies opportunities and participates in departmental efforts to increase the safe use of medications (e.g. clear labeling, new SALA medications and Epic improvements / corrections). Identifies and reports suspected adverse drug reactions in Midas. Counsels and consoles individuals involved in creating variances

Assures staff has the tools and time necessary to enhance their professional and clinical skills. Encourages staff development and education and assures staff is challenged to their level of comfort. Assures that drug information provided is accurate, adequate and timely.  Provides opportunity to staff to act as preceptor or liaison for pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.  Assist with the development of staff education programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • Graduate from ACPE accredited pharmacy college
  • Current US pharmacist license (Kentucky or Indiana eligible)

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Superior problem solving and critical thinking skills.    
  • Superior customer service and communication skills
  • Familiar with Current Practice Standards
