36Job Summary:
The Certified Dialysis Technician assists the registered nurses in providing treatment to dialysis patients.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
1.Receives patients into treatment area; weighs patients, takes temperature and blood pressure pre and post dialysis; documents on all dialysis flow sheets.
2.Sets up and monitors dialysis machines and reverse osmosis (RO) water system for correct functioning, responds to visual and audible alarms and makes appropriate adjustments before, during, and after the dialysis treatment, performs safety checks as directed by the registered nurse.
3.Performs and records vital signs and all other parameters of patients per policy and/or state regulations; obtains blood samples and culture specimens.
4.Collects patient data, including but not limited to: monitors and documents status of vascular access, documents patients observations and seeks guidance when levels are out of range for dialysis patients, reports patient parameters to registered nurse as needed.
5.Reviews dialysis prescription, notes general physical and mental condition of patient through observation and interview, obtains information and/or data to determine compliance to dietary or medication regimen; documents observations.
6.Initiates dialysis via approved access points using proper cannulation or Central Venous Catheter (CVC) techniques in accordance with state, federal, and local regulations.
7.Dismantles, cleans, and disinfects dialysis machines and equipment according to policy; performs appropriate end of therapy terminal cleaning and disinfection of the dialysis equipment.
8.Perform water treatment area checks prior to receiving patients in the unit. Will report any out-of-range variances to the charge nurse.
9.Performs clerical duties as needed which may include: filing, lab requisitions, scheduling appointments, answering phones, ordering supplies, billing, copying, faxing, and data entry.
10.Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- High school diploma / GED
- Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) or Dialysis Technician (DT) Certification
- BLS Certification
- Additional state requirements/regulations where applicable.
Specialized Knowledge:
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, and EPIC.
- Basic knowledge of the dialysis patient and the care required to dialyze that patient.
- Basic knowledge of the dialysis treatment, prescription, and access.
Kind and Length of Experience:
- 1 year experience as a Dialysis Technician in a hospital-based dialysis unit or a chronic dialysis unit.
DESIRABLE
- Completion of an Associate Degree.
- Ability to act quickly under stress and learn additional skills.
- Excellent phone etiquette and communication skills.
