The Scrub Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, licensed physician, or dentist, participates as a member of the surgical/procedural team to meet the surgical/procedural needs of the patient in the Perioperative setting.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.

Professional and Technical Skills:
Under the direct supervision of a licensed RN, physician, or dentist, the licensed practical nurse provides surgical/procedural care to designated operative patients.
- Respects the patients ethnic origin, spiritual beliefs and the right to privacy and confidentiality.
- Assists the circulating nurse (RN) as directed.
- Ensures ongoing personal growth and development.
- Knowledgeable of aseptic technique when functioning in the scrub person role in the perioperative setting.
- Obtains supplies and equipment based on the needs of the patient, surgeon/proceduralist, and anesthesia provider.
- Responsible for preparing and administering medications in the prescribed dosage, route, frequency; and observing, recording, and reporting desired effects, untoward reactions, and side effects of drug therapy.
- Ensures ongoing personal growth and development.
Quality/Customer Service:
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with patients, visitors, and health care team members.
- Maintains licensure/certification and completes all mandatory CBL modules, MID, and in-service programs.
- Under the direction of the registered nurse, participates in performance improvement activities.
Patient Safety:
- Performs accurate initial/baseline sponge, needle, sharps and instrument counts with the RN. Performs accurate consecutive sponge, needle, sharps and instrument counts with the RN.
- Under the direction of the RN, demonstrates knowledge of labeling and maintaining medications on sterile field.
- Adherence to Joint Commission, state and other regulatory requirements.
Financial Accountability:
Demonstrates fiscal accountability by efficient cost-effective utilization of equipment and supplies based on the needs of the patient, surgeon/proceduralist, and anesthesia provider.
On-Call Responsibilities:
Responds in the required time frame for emergent surgical/procedural cases and is prepared and ready within the required time frame.
Responsible for the supervising, teaching, mentoring, and delegating to unlicensed personnel based on their training and education activities relating to nursing care.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- Graduate from approved school of practical nursing
- Kentucky graduates prior to 1994 must provide documentation of a continuing education course in intravenous therapy.
- Out of state graduates must submit documentation of their schools' core curriculum that defines the course content for intravenous therapy or documentation of continuing education credit post basic education program.
- Exception to IV therapy education requirement is an LPN in Indiana or a Kentucky LPN assigned to Home Care, Private Duty, Behavioral Health, and OR, LPN SA, or LPN ST. (LPNSR or LPNST working Maternal Child Health must meet IV therapy education requirements.)
Specialized Knowledge:
- Knowledge of nursing care standards and procedures.
- Demonstrates ability to independently perform safe nursing skills and techniques.
