The Manager of Anatomic Pathology is responsible for the overall operational activities associated with the Histology, Cytology and Gross Room. The Manager will be responsible for daily management of specimen preparation and testing associated with tissue and body fluids submitted for diagnostic testing in those areas.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
Department Operations
- Manage daily operation of activities associated with Surgical Pathology, Histology and Cytology sections.
- Ensures prompt delivery of high quality histologically and cytologically prepared slides and stains. Collaborates with pathologists to assure smooth workflow.
- Manages Pathology Assistants daily activities and assigned functions in collaboration with the Medical Director and other applicable leadership.
- Ensures adequate staffing levels within defined budgetary and productivity limits.
- Continuously evaluates processes within areas of responsibility and redesigns as needed.
- Resolves technical problems and ensures action is taken whenever systems deviate from standard performance specifications.
- Oversees the development and maintenance of SOPs and ensures the procedures are up to date.
- Performs other duties as assigned to facilitate the operation of the lab.
- Collaborates with laboratory and hospital leadership to assure good processes and excellent patient care. Serves on assigned hospital committees.
Human Resources
- Coaches, mentors and develops direct and indirect reports adhering to I CARE values.
- Motivates employees to make improvements in their work and assures that those improvements align with organizational strategy.
- Collaborates with Human Resources department to interview, hire, provide direction for staff performance and disciplinary activities.
- Create and or modify job descriptions, when appropriate.
- Oversees work schedules, time off and overtime.
- Ensures training/cross-training of staff.
- Oversees departmental safety practices and follows up on any issues.
- Work with the IT department and pertinent pathologist to assure that all LIS modification, checklists, and changes are completed and promulgated.
- Obtains required CEUs including ones in management and assures staff have the required CEUs. Teaches in the Medical Technologist training program.
Communication and Customer Service
- Available for questions and consultation concerning technical and personnel issues and initiates corrective action through use of good communication and human relation skills with all staff at all laboratory sites.
- Works with senior laboratory leadership to promote standardization of policies and procedures and instrumentation.
- Conducts departmental meetings and assures appropriate departmental communication.

- Participates in the Journey to Excellence initiative
Quality Control/Assurance
- Manages Quality Control Program for departments within areas of responsibility. Works with the Pathologists for Total Quality Improvement initiatives and monitoring throughout Anatomic Pathology.
- Develops Performance Improvement Projects for Anatomic Pathology.
Regulatory and Accrediting Standards
- Participates in and meets requirements for all regulatory agencies for the areas of responsibility at all sites
- Responsible for the implementation of and employee participation in competency testing for areas of responsibility.
Equipment and Test Methodology
- Oversees the maintenance of equipment, supplies and procedures
- Monitors equipment for safety and longevity of use
- Evaluates and participates in the installation of new equipment including cross over studies and method comparisons. Participates in capital equipment process.
Financial
- Responsible for capital and operational budget submission and review process for designated cost center(s)
- Ongoing monitoring of cost center(s) financial reports including identification and explanation of variances
- Support supervisors and site managers promoting financial accountability for the laboratory operations
- Oversees supply chain management for areas of responsibility
- Provides appropriate analytics to justify new services
Assumes responsibilities for other duties as assigned to facilitate the efficient and cost-effective operation of the laboratory.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- Bachelor's Degree minimum requirement
- Advanced degree preferred. Masters or certified Pathology Assistant.
Specialized Knowledge:
Gross anatomy, surgical pathology specimen description and sectioning techniques. Working knowledge of Histology and Cytology operations. Knowledge of laboratory regulatory agency standards and compliance requirements (CAP, CLIA, JC)
Kind and Length of Experience:
5 years of related leadership experience in Surgical Pathology and/or Histology, Cytology operations, personnel management. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Pathology billing and coding knowledge preferred.
