Job Summary:

The Lab Technologist II processes specimens, performs tests and reports results (in their section) without supervision. May perform moderate to high complexity testing when appropriate training has been attained and is documented in personnel file.

Job Description:

Understands principle involved in assigned procedures and applies this knowledge to the clinical situation assisting in clinical diagnosis management of the patient. (See department competency sheet.)

Equipment: Operates, troubleshoots and performs required maintenance and function checks as directed, following established procedures.

Supplies: Maintains adequate supplies.

Procedures:  Performs procedures as directed to ensure high quality, accurate and cost-effective results in all areas of the laboratory.

Records patient data and other information quickly and accurately to ensure appropriate turnaround time. Properly communicates and documents critical lab results to licensed care provider or designee according to Laboratory Procedures and Policies.

Collects specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures for timely and accurate testing when applicable.  Performs proficiency testing in the same manner as patient specimens.

Performs and documents quality control as specified for each procedure meeting established internal and regulatory guidelines.

Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results.  Must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor.  Document all corrective action taken. 

Participates in Quality Assurance activities to meet the Medical Center's continuing quality improvement standards. Follow policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within established acceptable levels. Report/document all NCE according to established procedures.   

Cleans, organizes, and stocks lab workstations so work can be performed in a safe and orderly manner.

Enhances professional growth development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participating in continuing education, in-service training and the School of Medical Technology.

Performs other duties as assigned to facilitate the efficient and cost effective operation of the laboratory.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

Medical Technologist Non-Registered equivalent.

Bachelors Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Technology with the following credits:

  • 16 semester hours of Chemistry including Biochemistry lecture and lab or Organic Chemistry lecture and lab.
  • 16 semester hours of Biology including Immunology and Microbiology lectures and labs
  • Or MLT with a bachelors degree in a related field and has obtained the above credits in Chemistry and Biology. Must be board eligible.   

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Clinical Laboratory Skills

Kind and Length of Experience: 

  • Must have completed a NAACLS accredited MT/CLS program (Registry Eligible) OR completed at least 3 months training with documented competency in each discipline in which the associate will perform High Complexity Testing.
