Job Shadowing for Career Exploration with Workforce Development
Observation of Nursing and Allied Health Associates
The Job Shadowing Program, managed by Workforce Development, provides an advanced career exploration learning opportunity. It is best suited for individuals who have completed a basic career assessment or survey and have a focused awareness of healthcare pathways aligned with their unique aptitudes, abilities and interests.
This time-limited observational experience allows participants to shadow up to two healthcare careers within Nursing and/or Allied Health departments.

Please note: This application is ONLY for current college undergraduates who are obtaining a bachelor’s degree with the intent to apply for an advanced degree program after graduation. Application to these Masters/Doctorate programs often requires submission of related observation hours. Examples of these advanced degree programs are Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Athletic Training. Applying through this program will arrange for 25 hours or less of observation. If more than 25 hours is desired, please direct those requests to Volunteer Services. |
Required Documents
Immunizations/Screenings
- Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis [Tdap or DTaP]. Must have received after 2005.
- Two doses of series MMR [Measles, mumps, and rubella] OR therapeutic blood titer(s).
- Two doses of series Varicella OR documented proof of having had Chickenpox disease OR therapeutic blood titer.
- Current Influenza [Flu] vaccination (except for programs held May 1 through September 30).
- Tuberculosis [TB] Screening RESULT dated within the last year [of the last day of the program and/or shadowing].
- Approved TB Screening TEST TYPES:
- Negative reading of a TB Skin Test [PPD is another name.] A one-step or two-step skin test is acceptable.OR
- TB Blood Test: *QuantiFERON®-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus) & the T-SPOT®.TB test (T-Spot) are approved blood tests.
NOTE:
- Submitted documents must be readable, need to be from a healthcare provider, and clearly indicate the healthcare provider’s information.
- Documents must also reflect the individual’s name and birthdate, name/date of immunization, and test results (if applicable).
- To maintain the confidentiality of health records, Workforce Development is unable to access your records from your private St. Elizabeth physician, or from documents you submitted to participate in other St. Elizabeth Health Career Education or Volunteer program.
Background Check
Background Check: For those who are 18 at the time of shadowing
- A Criminal Background Check is required through this site: Background Checks – Kentucky Court of Justice (kycourts.gov).
- This must be dated within 6 months [of the last day of the program and/or shadowing].
- NOTE: To receive Criminal Record Request results electronically, the requestor must first become a registered user!
- There is a charge of $27.50 to receive the results electronically. See above site for obtaining background check in alternative ways.
- The individual must obtain their original result, then email the attached result to [email protected].
- DO NOT have your results sent directly to [email protected]
- This must be dated within 6 months [of the last day of the program and/or shadowing].

Shadowing Exclusions/Limitations
- The Office of Workforce Development schedules the observation experience based on the nature of the request, associate availability, department’s ability to host shadowers, etc.
- Based on the above, we will consider requests to shadow specific St. Elizabeth associates.
- Requests to shadow a relative will not be arranged; observation of alternate associates in the same/like role can be pursued.
Shadowing Days, Hours, Frequency
Day of the week: Monday through Friday (no weekends)
Time: Standard Business Hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Frequency: An individual may shadow up to 2 health careers for a maximum of 16 hours. This can be done once during a rolling year.
After Submitting Your Application
- Submission of Documents: An automated email will outline where to send all required documents.
- Your Schedule: It may take up to 4 weeks to schedule the shadowing experience from the time that all required documents are received/approved by St. Elizabeth. You commit to shadowing exclusively on the scheduled dates/times. Schedules are only changed in the event of illness or unforeseen emergencies.
- Directions: The following information will be included on your schedule: driving directions, parking or drop-off location, building entrance and where to meet your St. Elizabeth representative on the first day of shadowing.
- Forms and Onboarding Items: Once the schedule is determined, forms and onboarding material will be sent to you. These items need to be completed prior to shadowing.
- Badge: A temporary “Career Exploration” badge will be provided and is to be worn at all times when shadowing. You will include your emergency contact information on the back of the badge; please ensure this emergency contact will be available at all times during shadowing! The badge will be returned to the department contact at the end of shadowing.
While You Are Shadowing
- Valuables: Do not bring unnecessary valuables into the hospital while you are shadowing.
- Behavior Expectations: As a guest at St. Elizabeth, professional and courteous behavior/language is always expected. If you have any questions about appropriate conduct, immediately ask the associate you are shadowing for clarification.
- Always remain with the assigned associate; follow all directions provided to you.
- Prior to providing care, the associate will obtain permission from the patient/family for a shadower to be present.
- Shadowers may be temporarily reassigned to another associate if this consent is not given by the patient/family.
- You will not be observing care provided to patients in Airborne Precautions.
- No cell phones or electronics should be in use during Shadowing; photography or recording of any kind is strictly prohibited.
- The use of tobacco and e-cigarettes in any form on St. Elizabeth Healthcare property (including leased property), is prohibited.
- Dress Code: Your appearance should reflect professionalism. Dress code is Business Casual:
- General:
- Clothing should be of appropriate size and fit; refrain from clothes that are tight or form-fitting, as well as those that are baggy or loose fitting.
- Scrubs pants/sets are not acceptable for shadowing (including joggers).
- Undergarments should not be visible.
- Slacks:
- Full length slacks are required; however, they should not drag the floor.
- Slacks are to be a solid color; most shadowers wear khakis or dark slacks.
- If a skirt is worn, it must be of appropriate length and style.
- The following are not permitted:
- Jeans/denim or nylon pants.
- Capris, joggers, stirrups, athletic leggings, exercise pants, sweatpants.
- Tops:
- Acceptable tops include sweater, polo, or button-down shirt.
- The following are not permitted:
- Sleeveless or midriff tops.
- T-shirts, hoodies or sweatshirts.
- Accessories/Fragrances:
- Avoid extremes in jewelry or perfume/cologne/scents.
- Hair:
- Hair needs to be neat and pulled away from face.
- Body Piercings:
- (Other than those in the ears) piercings must be covered or removed while shadowing.
- Tattoos/Body Art:
- These are to be covered/not visible while shadowing.
- Shoes:
- Must totally enclose the foot, including the toe and heel (no crocs or sandals).
- Shoes need to be comfortable with minimal heels.
- Gym/tennis shoes are fine if they are clean and neat (especially since you will be walking).
- Socks/hose are required.
- General:
- NOTE: For Shadowers in Labor and Delivery only: Once you arrive to the Labor and Delivery department, you will change into scrubs. Even though you will be wearing shoe covers, please bring with you a pair of old shoes to wear during shadowing.
In the Event of Illness on Your Shadowing Day(s):
“Any nonemployee healthcare worker and/or hospital contractor are to exclude themselves from the hospital if they experience symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infection or other infectious diseases until the condition resolves.”
Please notify the Shadowing Program contact if you feel ill (see above) or are unable to participate fully in your observation role for any reason on your day(s) of scheduled shadowing. You can be rescheduled for your experience as soon as you are free of symptoms/signs of illness and/or are able to participate fully in the shadowing experience.
